Red Bull X-Row Luzern

The second edition of the Red Bull X-Row took place from Zug to Luzern. 6 Teams were fighting for the title. Who is going to be the fastest on the water and on the field?

The Red Bull X-Row is unique in its format because it is not just a rowing race. The athletes have to row 3 pieces on the water and run 3 pieces across land, totaling 18km on water and 7km on the ground. Starting from the See-Club Zug, passing by the oh so famous Hohlegasse, where  Wilhelm Tell was waiting for the rowers, and the finish at the Verkehrshaus Luzern (transport museum) with an amazing spring finish.

Against the 2010 winners from Frankfurt: the Strength & Purchase team from the UK ; composed of former members of the GB Rowing Team, the Zee-Club Zurich; with some athletes from Oxford, 2 juniors teams from Frankfurt and Luzern. The biggest treat however, for the German team, was coming from Switzerland’s top athletes. The two Olympics boats of Switzerland with Mario Gyr (LM4-) and Andre Vonarbutg (M4x) teamed up to form the best Swiss eight ever.

The race started right on time with a slight headwind. Despite a slow start and some boat waves the Swiss Team took the lead before the first run. From there, the Swiss Team never lost this position, despite some minor hits with the German crew trying to overtake the Swiss during the run.

The Swiss crew, formed by Gyr, Tramer, Schurch, Schmidt, Vonarburg, Stahlberg, Maillefer, Annen and Csonka (coxswain), won the race in a time of 2:00:33 followed 2’27’’ later by the former champions from Frankfurt.

An intense 2011 Red Bull X-Row which brings rowing to the edge in a challenging format combined with the Swiss tradition.

Thanks to the organisation of Red Bull, the motivation of the athletes and the very supportive public.

Red Bull X-Row 2011, gives you wings…
